Ostracised explores social ostracism. The physical signs of discrimination are clear to see but psychological abuse can be equally damaging. A disturbing resurgence of hate crime has highlighted the crucial role of ongoing education in fostering a tolerant, cosmopolitan society. Ostracised is an avant-garde fashion film addressing this troubling issue. The film was created in collaboration with The Sophie Lancaster Foundation, which provides educational resources challenging prejudice and intolerance towards alternative subcultures.
Ostracised tackles all areas of discrimination, with a target demographic of people aged 16-22, addressing the lack of educational resources aimed at this age group. The film tailors to an abstract way of thinking to increase engagement and empathy, encouraging self-questioning to discover the true message of anti-discrimination. The fashion element is key in providing a visual means to question and interpret. The dedicated website promotes Ostracised and The Sophie Lancaster Foundation, and is designed as an educational resource accessible to both its intended audience, their parents and professionals working with young adults.
Its Instagram page sparks initial interest in Ostracised from its social media driven audience and will be updated as additional educational projects develop. Ostracised is a portrayal of the emotional scars inflicted by a society in infiltrated by ignorant discrimination. An unnamed victim, she, is the startling focus. Questions about her ostracism are left unanswered, allowing every viewer to identify with her predicament individually. Constrained and outcast by the unwritten rules of society, she is overwhelmed by the daily nightmare of her depressing existence. Consumed by negative emotions, her frustration is interspersed with glimpses of acceptance, being welcomed into society, before being stripped back to her normality; ostracised and alone.
